Business Planning – Don’t bring in the HOW

Neil Annis - Monday 23.06.08, 07:00am

At the formation stage of goals and plans try not to bring in how you might achieve this vision. Planning how to achieve it could jeopardize the creativity and cloud what is possible for the future.

If working with a team it may take some time to agree on the right goals for the business but getting people involved from the start would help support and clarify how others view things. Some of the best ideas come from the bottom up but keeping the ‘how’ out of the discussion could be a challenge.
With both business and personal goals the how will came at some stage but not right now. Keep this time free of clutter and work on what first.

Clarity of Purpose

Once you have decided upon the direction and purpose that best suits your company you will need to communicate this to all employees so that everyone knows what you are jointly aiming for.

For your personal goals the clarity is also vital but the sharing may not be so important. Ensuring your goals remain uppermost in your head is just as important as they are in the business world and taking on some of these suggestions could help.

Clarity of direction and purpose is the key to keeping staff involved and working towards the vision. Be creative in the ways you communicate the vision to everyone but ensure a consistent message.

• On posters
• Screen savers
• In meetings
• At briefing sessions

Repeat the aim frequently; you would be surprised at how short peoples’ memories are. Remember that communication is a two way process. Questions need to be listened to and any concern over change, real or perceived, must be given due consideration.
